Gift Ideas for the New Big Sister

A new baby in the family is a big change for the older kids in the house. Suddenly there’s someone claiming quite a bit of Mommy’s attention, and they can’t be reasoned with. Every little thing the new baby does gets attention while the older kids wonder what’s so special.

This is a very important time to help an older sister feel special too. She may be feeling neglected and jealous.

One of the most special gifts you can give the new big sister is your time. Take her out of the house without the baby along. She’ll love the attention. Find something she loves to do or just go get ice cream.

You could also make a gift basket for her. Include a bit of jewelry in a small jewelry box, a toy or so, books about being a big sister or maybe even a big sister t-shirt.

Something personalized is a good choice too. Exactly what depends on the girl and how old she is. Even very young girls will love a locket, although you might not want to spend too much money if you think it is likely to get lost. Door hangers and wall plaques can also be interesting choices.

If big sister is really interested in the baby, get her a baby doll all her own. Many little girls love taking care of their baby while Mommy takes care of hers. My daughter used to pretend to nurse her baby as I nursed her brother, and talked to me very matter of fact about it.

If you are going to have the time to play it with her, a new game can be nice for the new big sister too. You don’t want something else that Mommy can’t do with her if you can’t help out, of course. However, from about age 4 on up there is probably a game she would enjoy.

Becoming a big sister isn’t easy. It means losing some of Mommy’s attention. You can help the new big sister ease her transition and make things a little more fun for her.
